Nouwen and Home

I was talking to my friend Chuck.  Check out his Facebook profile and tell him that he’s awesome.  Don’t tell him that I sent you there.

So we were talking tonight about many things, and one of the things that came up was Henri Nouwen’s idea of Home.  We both love Henri and his ideas.  Henri Nouwen had this concept of Home – being Home.  Nouwen described this innate desire for everyone to want to be in this place where you can truly be yourself – to be in a place where you can let your hair down and not have to act like someone that you are not – to be in a place where you can truly recharge and find rest – no pretense – no expectations – just be yourself.

Inherent in this idea is the fact that most of us don’t have that safe place to be ourselves.  Many don’t feel safe where they are at.  Many are not safe to just be themselves.  This place that he describes where we can be fully and completely loved.  It is that place to experience the unconditional love of God.  It is this place that Nouwen calls Home, and inherently, we long to be there-need to be there.  (I’m doing this by memory so if you have recently read any of Nouwen’s stuff – by all means, please correct me).

Because of this unconditional love, there is freedom to leave Home, to stay at Home, to return Home.  One can always find unconditional love and safety at Home.  I love that idea of Home.  Not many know Home.  Not many have Home.

A follow up idea to Nouwen’s Home is the idea of Nouwen’s Room – but that will come later.

Hope you will have a look at the latest Nouwen release: “Home Tonight: Further Reflections on the Parable of the Prodigal Son”, edited by Sue Mosteller, C.S.J.

Maureen – thanks for the comment. Is it worth reading someone elses ideas on Nouwen? I was just curious. I mean, wouldn’t it be worth it to just read Nouwen again rather than read someone about Nouwen? I’ll definitely look into it, but I would love further feedback from you about Mostellers book. Thanks.
