This is what I saw on the back of a car tonight on the way up to Orange County to pick up my wife.  This car was all decorated like they had just gotten married.  It was all over the back window of the car.  It was all drawn up-with balloons and everything.  It looked like what it would look like with a couple driving off from their wedding but instead of “just married,” it said “getting a divorce.”

At first, I thought it was hilarious.  It took a great idea and made it funny.  I actually laughed out loud while I was driving, but the more I thought about it, the more it made me sad.  Someone’s marriage had disintegrated.  If they had kids, they wre going to be messed up in some way because mom and dad couldn’t make it work.  I was sadden almost as quickly as I laughed at the sign.  I don’t know what the reason for it.  I don’t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing.  I was surprised at how funny it was at one point and how sad it was at almost an immediate point.

I know it happens.  I have it in my family.  It’s never the answer, but it happens.  Divorce – even on the back of a window all dressed up with balloons and everything – is never funny.
