You and the Company That You Keep

We’ve heard it growing up. We will become like the company that we keep. Inherent in identity formation is this idea of identity construction, and it’d be nice if the only type was self-construction; where I decided who I want to become. But don’t underestimate the power of a socially-constructed identity. You become like the company that you keep.

So do you hang out with losers or winners? Do you hang out with leaders or sheep walkers (no offense to the sheep walking profession)? Do the people that you hang out with have a vision and passion to change the world? Here are a few pointers:

1. Get yourself a mentor – or be so amazing that people want to mentor you.
2. Be accountable and keep others accountable.
3. Make a list of the company that you keep. Are you building into them or taking from them? You need both.
4. Create the time and space to be socially-constructed. Hang out with those that will build you up.

This might mean that you un-friend some of your FB friends. That’s alright. You don’t need the negative influences in your life. Share your dreams with people that will help you get your IDEAS to DONE.
