National Identity

The Olympics always brings about a strong sense of National Identity.  When the Olympics aren’t around, we are divided on all sorts of issues – conservative vs. liberals, yes vs. no (on you pick the prop. or issue), choice vs. life.

When the Olympics are around – no matter what the sport –  there is a strong ethnocentrism that causes us to cheer for the USA.  It is a part of our identity.  It causes us to cheer for US or sometimes cheer against whatever other country we’re competing against – even if it’s men’s figure skating.

You are your country.  Having a strong sense of National Identity – helps you in your self-understanding.
