There are 2 ways that your email address represents your identity.

The first way is that whatever the screen name, handle, or name that you’ve chosen to represent you (and it might be your real name) demonstrates something about you.  ShopGirl or ChopGirl communicates something about a person – and it could even be the same person.

The second way is that whenever you sign up for a profile, you need an email address (typically) to sign up.  The website wants to know who you are – by your e mail address.  Honestly, they want to be able to send you something or eventually sell you something for access to their site.
