I was listening to Mitch Joel’s Six Pixel’s of Separation podcast – where he interviews Nilofer Merchant and her new book, the New How.
They talked about Jim Collin’s idea of the “getting the right people on the bus.” Nilofer talked about how people get on the bus, but then what do they do on the bus? Are they allowed to innovate in their seat or are they expected to just sit on the bus. The bus analogy is great because everyone on the bus is headed in the same direction. But the limits of the bus is it’s a bus. The bus can carry lots of people, but it’s big and long. The bus is slow where as innovation is quicker. Innovation dies because of the limits of the bus. I like the bus idea. I don’t like the limits of the bus.
