Years ago in college, I had to do this internship as an academic requirement in order for graduation. One of the important lessons from that experience was this idea of building bridges. My degree was in education, and the concept of bridging the gap or building bridges was the dominant metaphor that my internship advisor wanted to teach me. I quickly learned though that just because you build a bridge doesn’t mean that you’ve walked over it. We can build bridges all day and feel good about ourself, but never cross the bridge.
Social Networks and New Media is the same. You can become friends or fans and build bridges, but what are you going to do to connect. How are you going to connect with that person? How are you sharing your ideas and your content with them, and how are you going to allow them to connect with you.
Building a network (bridge) is good. Making connections make you great.
