I was recently talking to a fellow blogger about how they have a friend that has taken their online social media behavior offline. Their friend has a condition that doesn’t allow them to leave the house. Social media is the perfect outlet for someone that does not get much face to face interaction. This individual is on Facebook all the time, and they “like” and “comment” on everything that their circle of friends has posted.
We all have friends that spend way too much time online and comments on everything that you and your friends post. But during a rare offline gathering of these friends, this particular individual (the one that doesn’t get out much and is stuck at home often) had to “like” and “comment” on everyone’s face to face conversation. They had taken their online behavior and had integrated it into their offline (face to face) interactions.
The behavior online is no different than a face to face interaction – well, in the mind anyway. Your online behavior will affect your offline, real world interactions with people. The reason why is that all interaction comes from the same place. Whether you’re online or face to face, your ideas originate from you heart, from your mind.
The opposite can also be true – for the same reason. Have you observed “facebook-like” behaviors in your interactions with your friends-offline?
