Leadership Training

I was listening to the Tribes audiobook this morning on the way to work. Seth says that we have been trained for years to avoid leadership. That definitely resonates with me – I can think of opportunities where I consciously avoided leadership, but what how about the unconscious avoidance of leadership. I definitely agree with him. As I talk to my student leaders, the first things out of their mouth usually is how they’re not ready for leadership – or how they don’t think they can do the job – or how they don’t have the qualities that this other person has. I say some of those things. We all need that encouragement from a mentor or a friend – because we have been trained to avoid leadership.

But there are those – there are those that know that they don’t have it all together – that there are inconsistencies – that there are insecurities, but you can count on them to lead.

I want to start thinking through how I’ve avoided leadership and make some of those changes. How have you avoided leadership? How have you been trained to avoid leadership, and what did you do to change it?
