About 5 years ago, I went to a conference where the theme of the conference was this idea that we are moving into the age of specialization. It takes years to plan a national conference so really this idea was something that a few people cooked up 6+ years ago.
I was cruising the hundreds of channels that are at my disposal because of the programming that I got through AT&T. I am amazed at the choices of channels available to me. I watch a show this morning – completely devoted to Running — Running. Right now on tv, I can watch pretty much any sport. I have up for offer – horse racing, soccer, drag racing, tons of football, a show called “The Fowl Life with Chad Belding,” and then all the other specialized channels – Do It Yourself Network, Fuel TV, and all the pay channels. BYU has a channel – where are the Southern Baptist or the CMA-ers?
With the specialization and the customization available to us, we will continue to be less and less satisfied with our choices – for more on that – check out Barry Schwartz’s book The paradox of choice or check out my quick review of the book here.
You know what’s ironic, with all of these choices, I still sometimes say that there’s “nothing on tv.”
