Take the Emotion Out of It

Have you ever heard anyone say this – that somehow we should just “take the emotion out of it”?  Have you said it?

I had the opportunity to fill in for some classes this week.  The students were working on their Philosophy of Education.  They were working on developing this paper for their thoughts and philosophical foundations for education.  It was fascinating to hear their ideas and to be in class with them.

I happened to be teaching the class, but as I was teaching, I was also learning.  As we were thinking about our thoughts on philosophical foundations (which is more intellectual and cognitive), I realized that what drove our thinking of these thoughts were our feelings of these thoughts.  The exercises and assignments were intellectual, but what drove them was emotional.  The philosophies of each student were colored by their emotions and their experiences.  It was a very emotional time.

In all that you do, it is impossible to take the emotion out of it.  In fact, taking the emotion out of something is an emotional thing.  If you do know how to take the emotion of something – a conversation or planning or anything – let me know.
