If you stop to think about our educational system and what we unintentionally teach to our students – we prefer that our students:
– Sit still
– Raise your hands if you want to stay something
– Color in the lines
– Stand in line
– To do math every day
– That listening is learning
– That your value is on a 4.0 scale
– An A is the best grade; and to some, the only grade
And a whole host of other asinine things.
Some students need to move to think. They fidget and squirm, but it’s completely normal for them to do so in order to think. They play with their pencils or doodle, but that keeps them engaged. We teach lots of great things as educators, but we also educate them against every natural inclination that they have. As if sitting still was better.
