….but don’t do as I do.
I’m reading Blue Ocean Strategy it’s a book that talks about how as a business – the goal is to find a Blue Ocean – to be the place to market where there is no competition. Julien Smith would refer to it as “making your own game.” The Red Ocean – characterized by benchmarking, and competition – comparing yourself to the competitors – is the traditional way for value and market strategy. Good stuff right – make the competition irrelevant so that you’re the only game in this Blue Ocean.
I love though the irony. The book is telling me to change and create value – do something different – pull from another industry. Take what you’re doing and make it better – but I’m reading it in a book – a boring, not-new-way to share a story or ideas. So a boring (not different or new way) book is telling me to be different and create a Blue Ocean. They should have done that with way that they told me that – not in a book.
