Shiny Objects

I’m sitting in this huge ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.  Wendy Kopp from Teacher for America is speaking.  There are 4 huge 20 feet screens above the stage.  Even though Wendy Kopp is standing up front in the middle of the room on the stage, most everyone would rather watch her on the huge screen than look at her on stage.  We would rather interact with the digitized Wendy Kopp on the screen rather than the real live one on stage.  She’s here.

We like Shiny Objects.  There’s just something about it.  It draws us to it.  In a world full of noise – where everything is competing for our attention, big Shiny Objects win.

What’s your Shiny Object?

BTW-Wendy’s Shiny Object is that she’s making a huge difference in the lives of our students and in education.
