Sex and Identity

Have you ever thought about your sexual identity?  I’m not talking about sexual orientation or sexual characteristics.  I am talking about your sexual identity formation.  I have never thought about mine until I started studying it and reading it.  I can’t talk about identity formation without studying sex and identity – it is a part of everyone’s identity.

One thing that caught my attention is this idea of the silence in one’s sexual identity.  You sense of your sexual identity is shaped by media, your past relationships, what you read, the things that you’ve joked about, the abuse that you’ve experienced in the past – all of it shapes your sense of identity and possibly your sexual identity.  When you are silent about  your sexual identity – it can have deleterious effects on your sexual identity.
