Identity Performance

It’s an interesting concept.  I think in past posts, I would have referred to it as Identity Projection, but I really like the nuance of the word performance.  A performance is not natural.  Here are a few definitions:

per·for·mance (pr-fôrmns)

n.

1. The act of performing or the state of being performed.
2. The act or style of performing a work or role before an audience.
3. The way in which someone or something functions.
4. A presentation, especially a theatrical one, before an audience.

I have written about identity roles and real identity, but this idea is that an individual has to play out a particular identity – act it out as a performance where it isn’t natural.

It’s much easier to just be real and natural, but Facebook has conditioned us to be perform our identities.  Identity can be acted out and performed.  It can be a beautiful thing.
