Watching the game today challenged my sense of National Identity. I had an expectation of the players to look more – well – Algerian. I was not expecting a blond haired guy on the team. I had expectations of what I thought the National Identity of the team was – I was wrong. I had to assimilate, and the process was interesting – finding reasons in my mind for why they didn’t look like I thought they should have.
I asked one of our African students the reason for why that was, and he satisfied my curiosity. He also gave a pretty good answer.
Our expectations should be consistent with what’s really out there. We can change our expectations accordingly.
