Identity Consistency

I just read an article on Mashable about how you can maintain some consistency on your online identities.  Here‘s the article.  As the article says, sometimes you end up with multiple online identities which need a sense of consistency across the different platforms.  I would agree with the article in that the consistency of identities across each profile is helpful.  Your social online identity can be consistent.

I would argue – from a psychological identity perspective – that it’s already consistent.  The inconsistency represented in the social online identities might be “consistent” with the internal psychological identity.  So identity consistency across the social media plain is one thing, but an inconsistency on that plain might be consistent with what’s going on inside.

The thing is – you can’t fake identity.  Even when you fake it, it represents a true part of you = that you want to fake it.
