J. K. Rowling and Selective Hearing

I watched the Oprah and Rowling interview with my wife last week.  Then this morning, the news casters and gossip columnists are talking about 8, 9, and 10.  I heard someone on the radio say that this was the best news that they had heard all weekend.  HP 8, 9, and 10 will bring tremendous joy to millions of people.

In the same interview, Rowling described the pain and the hurt that she has had to experience to write 1-7.  J. K. Rowling says that she might write 8, 9, and 10, but she also describes her life with these character that lives in.  The death and the loss in the books represent her deep pain and hurt.

The selective hearing of so many focused in on the joy that 8, 9, and 10 would bring to them, but it was interesting that they decided not to focus on the pain and work that Rowling would have to experience to write it.  One person’s pain = millions of people’s joy.  It’s easy to focus on the billions and the products, but what stood out to me was the price.  What’s cool is that she hasn’t forgotten it.  How can you?
