Lem Usita has spent two decades at the intersection of developmental psychology, education, and organizational leadership. His doctoral dissertation at Biola University in 2010 examined how adolescents form identity in online spaces — years before the smartphone saturated adolescent social life and before researchers began sounding the cultural alarm. That pre-crisis research foundation is the basis for everything he teaches, speaks, and writes today.
His work translates the foundational research of developmental psychologist James Marcia into language parents, practitioners, and leaders can actually use. The Formation Framework — built on Marcia’s four identity statuses and rendered accessible as The Floater, The Performer, The Seeker, and The Rooted — is the lens through which Dr. Usita addresses adolescent development, digital culture, family legacy, and organizational identity.
Dr. Usita has served as a professor, dual enrollment instructor, Vice President of Student Life, development director, and nonprofit executive across institutions in California and the Pacific Northwest. He is the founder of Identity Specialist LLC and the creator of the Formation and Phones platform — a talk, assessment, book, and YouTube series helping parents understand what is actually happening inside their teenager.
He is an ordained minister with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, holds his Ed.D. from Biola University, and teaches Human Development at California State University San Marcos. He lives in San Diego with his wife Krista and their son.
