Planning is optimal in a controlled environment. When everything in the situation is under control – plans work. When plans are made in a context that it is not controlled – plans don’t always work. The situation changes. Feelings get hurt. Plans work when it is controlled.
Leadership is needed in a situation out of control, and let’s face it – most of life, business, and relationships are not completely in your control. You need to be able to make quick changes as things happen. It is possible to not constantly be reacting to the situation – as things change, instead of reacting, you can have others react to you.
Planning is good – in a controlled environment. The ability to lead through changes – that’s even better.
