It’s always great to write a post and realize that I had already titled another post with the same title. Here’s my previous post about Negative Space having to do with the space between thoughts and breaths.
Today, I had a conversation with a friend about unrealistic expectations. We are all at a certain level of growth and development. Anything within the range of our growth and development we are responsible for. Sometimes though, we might place expectations on ourselves – way beyond our comprehension and experience. Sometimes we can place expectations on ourselves outside of our development or ability.
On a scale of 1-10, you might be at 6 on the developmental scale. You can place upon yourself the unrealistic expectation of performing at at 9, but there is the negative space of 6-9 that you have not yet experience or developed in. There is no way a 6 can perform at a 9 level. There is negative space, but not only is there negative space, those unrealistic expectations can be a negative thing.
This is the space where you start thinking that you’re not good enough or you’re not smart enough – and that no one likes you.
In development and formation, you need to go through the growth process to get to 7 – 8 – 9 and even 10. Expecting a 6 to perform at a 9 leads to Negative Space.
