Teaching Without Talking

I am a teacher.  Well, I am a teacher by trade, but it is also what I am – even if I didn’t do it as a profession.  I was thinking about this today – but as I teacher, I do most of my teaching by talking.  I teach.  I say things.  I lecture.  I am the professor in class so I profess things.

Today though, I had a class where I just set up the assignment and did not speak.  They followed the guidelines for the plan that we were working on.

After the class, I had follow up conversations with a few students and many of them were able to articulate their development plan.  They all had learned something about themselves.  They all took the time to consider the information and learned.

And I didn’t have to say anything.  Teaching doesn’t always necessarily need talking.
