I was listening to some experts chat yesterday. It was interesting to hear them talk about how it was possible to have expertise in something, but to also be horrible in the actual experience of it. You can have expertise, and not be an expert in it.
Does this make sense to you? The example they used was the counselor or therapist that has expertise, but they have horrible family or personal lives. They can fix other people’s problems, but they can’t handle their own. It could be someone with expertise in identity or an expert in philosophy, but in practice – not an expert. Luckily, I’m only a specialist in identity and not an expert.
Just because there is the presence of foibles doesn’t lessen someone’s expertise. It’s possible to have expertise and not be an expert.
